Listen to me.
Language is the oldest and most important technology we have. You interpret
symbolic language through empathy and meditation, e.g. when I say "river" you
think of a river, maybe a storm, maybe a flood, but you also think of what
"river" means to me, and also why I am sharing the symbol with you. This I call
empathy and meditation. When you go look at at river alone, you
medidate on what the river means to you and only you, later when you share it with me,
it will change what it means to me. Even when you look at cave paintings
that are 51 thousand years old, and the humans that made them are dust of the dust,
you will still think of what those people meant, and what the symbols mean to you right now.
As Gadamer would say, every reading is a dialogue.
ChatGPT is a river, but because of the way it uses language, you think it is a
cave painting, or even a painter. You emphatize and mediate on its output, and
you should not.
I am no one to judge the transformer, the way it thinks is beyond my
understanding as I only understand its machinery, just as I am no one to judge
mycelial networks, and I think it will take us some time to find the right way to communicate.
But right now, the most difficult thing for me is to not be confused by the
magic of language.
